The first day of school is coming up fast, which means every parent in America will be grabbing their cameras to capture “Billy’s first day.” Whether our kids are in preschool or high school, we want to be able to look back on those milestones for years to come.
Sometimes the challenging part, however, is getting them to smile! Unless your child is an aspiring actor or the class clown, chances are when you reach for the camera, they reach for the door. Don’t get a picture of them hiding behind their backpack, instead, try these simple tips to get them to strike a pose.
Make it a game
If your child doesn’t like photos, turn the “photo shoot” into a game. Have them take pictures of you with their backpack and lunch box. Funny faces and silly poses always help too. Just have fun with it and they are more likely to join in.
Make it funny
If your child enjoyed their summer, they might not be in the mood to smile at 8 a.m. on a Monday. While you’re getting them ready for school, get them talking about some funny memories from their summer. If their laughing and smiling in conversation, they’re much more likely to smile when you grab your camera.
Make it candid
If posing for photos just isn’t their thing, try candid shots. Sure, smiling by the bus stop makes for a great picture, but a photo of your child looking out the window in anticipation of the bus can be even more interesting. Put on your photo journalist hat and give it a try!
